The topic of conversation throughout the dinner table was the 10 new <a href="http://Leolinda.com/frame.asp?frameurl=http://scwaz.com/?p=2803" title="Sun City West Pickleball Courts">Sun City West Pickleball Courts</a> and the Grand opening yesterday at the <strong>Palm Ridge Recreation Center</strong>. The <strong>R.H. Johnson Recreation Center</strong> already had 5 pickleball courts making the total pickleball courts available to <strong>Sun City West</strong> homeowners as 15. All courts are available to individuals who possess a current Sun City West homeowners recreation activity card. </p> <p><a href="http://leolinda.com/default.asp.pg-SunCityWest" title="Sun City West real estate homes for sale"><img title="Sun City West AZ Pickleball" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/1/4/4/1/8/ar126371665781441.jpg" height="202" alt="" width="325"></a></p> <p>I haven't had the opportunity to participate in the sport that is a growing trend throughout the nation and has swept through <strong>Arizona retirement communities</strong>. It's not a surprise that pickleball is an Arizona favorite since a great number of Washintonians call Arizona home, especially in the retirement communities of Sun City, <a href="http://Leolinda.com/frame.asp?frameurl=http://scwaz.com/?p=2803" title="Sun City West Pickleball Courts">Sun City West</a> and <a href="http://leolinda.com/default.asp_Q_f_E_cpg_A_pg_E_SunCityGrand_02" title="Sun City Grand Surprise Arizona real estate">Sun City Grand</a>.</p> <p><strong>Pickleball</strong> is played on a court that is the size of a badminton court but with a lower net, a small wooden paddle and a wiffle ball. According to the USA Pickleball Association, the game started in 1965 with a game between Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell. It was played on a badminton court with cut off badminton paddles that evolved into small wood paddles, and with a perforated plastic ball. It's been on my mind like a child waiting to open a present, the anticipation and unknown was a driving force for me to attain my goal. I've thought about this experience with long awaited hope, wondering if I could really do it. I'm sure you're wondering what I so much wanted to do so badly, well today I finally did it. I drove up to the high mountain slope in Hawaii this morning, wanting to be part of the group that could say, "I did it!" I rode down the gulches in Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, the birthplace of King Kamehameha, on a zip line from the top of the mountain and tree tops. Now I can be officially called a "zip chick". </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span> Our zip line adventure began with us checking into the Big Island Eco Adventure located in Hawi Hawaii. <img title="Banyan Tree Hawi Hawaii" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/9/9/6/1/7/ar132512507571699.JPG" height="206" alt="Banyan Tree Hawi Hawaii" width="343">The reservations clerk provided clear directions; from highway 270 turn makai on highway 260, the office is located next to the theater across the street from the big banyan tree. First one would need to know that makai means ocean meaning that the turn would be left. It was easy to find, not because I was raised on the Big Island but because I saw the sign that clearly identified the road. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><img title="Cupcake and Mr Z" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/7/2/1/4/1/ar132512481614127.JPG" height="238" alt="Woody and Leolinda Bowers" width="310">We checked in and were instructed to wait in the next room for rest of the group. After all were assembled, the guides provided each with a named helmet. I was named Cupcake, my husband Mr Z. Each person was harnessed, and each harness was checked by a second tour guide. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><img title="Hawaiian Zip Lines" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/3/2/6/0/6/ar132512543860623.JPG" height="300" alt="Hawaiian Zip Lines" width="400">Off we were in a four wheel vehicle previously used to transport Swiss missiles. The 45 minute trip up the rugged and muddy mountain road revealed the lush forest in its splendor. The first zip line was about 50 yards away from the drop off point. At the first platform, our tour guides explained the safety procedures in riding a zip line.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span><span><span><img title="Zipping through Paradise" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/9/0/7/0/9/ar132512649790709.JPG" height="300" alt="Hawaii Vacaton" width="400"></span> </span>I was extremely reluctant to jump off the first platform to the forest canopy 400 feet below. My husband jumped off first and I was the last to zip; I really had to be bribed. The adrenaline rush on each and every jump resulted in an euphoric high. The canyons were spectacular, displaying Mother Nature in rural Hawaii with all of the verdant colors in the spectrum. <img title="Big Island Eco Adventure" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/9/4/9/5/1/ar132512462815949.JPG" height="225" alt="Zip Line Hawaii" width="300"> We walked a suspension bridge over the top of a 60 foot waterfall cascading to a fountain 100 feet below. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Zip lines were 500 ft to 1,500 ft long. We zipped at 500 foot heights above the canyon floor. The company provided snacks and beverages at a tree house that towered 250 feet above the forest floor. During the short hike between the zip jump offs guides provided information of the forest and Hawaii flora, pointing out forest animals, plants, flowers and edible forest greenery.</span></p> <p>Please excuse the screaming on my video.</p> <p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>I would strongly advise anyone who has the slightest desire or inclination to participate in this type of adventure to go through with it. Christmas is a time of giving and sharing with family and friends.</p> <p>After a late Christmas eve, we woke early this morning to watch my young cousins open their Christmas presents. My cousin Charlotte prepared a filling breakfast, and our our entire family attended church services in Honokaa Hawaii. A young parishioner was baptized and confirmed, with his entire family in attendance. Over 50 of my family and friends partook in our Christmas lunch. After a short nap, it was the perfect time to watch the Green Bay and Chicago football game. I love going home to Hilo, it reminds me of my carefree childhood days. Celebrating Christmas in Hawaii is different from other US cities. Here people enjoy frolicking on the beach during the day and listening to Hawaiian Christmas music under star filled skies at night.</p> <p>Many of my childhood days were spent in a small town on the opposite side of the island. Puako is located on the Kohala Coast. Its nearby beach, Spencer Beach Park, still remains a popular beach attraction. My parents would frequently take us from Hilo to Puako on an endless trip to enjoy the glistening white sands and the placid beach. Days were spent on the beach and evenings around a campfire singing Hawaiian songs, discussing the sea shells found or waves rode. <br><img title="Hawaiian Sunsets" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/7/8/2/6/6/ar132473885566287.JPG" alt="Hawaii Christmas 2011" width="450"></p> <p>Today my husband and I spent the day swimming at Spencer Beach and watching children at play. The water was warm and salty, laughter was in the air, and the sun was bright and hot. We saw two rainbows; it was a typical day in Hawaii, but not so typical for me since moving to Arizona. We watched the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean then joined some of my cousins for dinner at the Hapuna Prince Hotel. An entertainer sang on the balcony terrace. We listened to the familiar Hawaiian Christmas carols while waiting to be seated.The 12 days of Christmas, sang Hawaiian style brought back many childhood memories. My husband and I had our prioriorties. Upon arrival at Honolulu International Airport, I received an offer on one of my listings. I presented the offer to the seller and the negotiations began.</p> <p>The flight from Honolulu to Hilo was short but with turbulance. Visibility was scarce. Although we had showers, the rain welcomed me, a Hilo wahine home. </p> <p>After picking up our rental, we drove from Hilo to Waiamea. We traveled on the Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in a curtain of fog. After a brief visit with my Aunty, we were off to the Hapuna Prince on the Kohala Coast. Making tee times for the next morning was our first priority.
