Established 49 years ago, hula troupes converge onto the Big Island annually. Seating is limited and tickets are difficult to obtain. If you are fortunate to be drawn for tickets, hotel rooms are next to impossible. Many people either stay at bed-and-breakfasts or in Kona, a 2 hour drive from Hilo. Obtaining a car rental is another challenge.<img title="Merrie Monarch Hilo Hawaii" src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/1/7/1/3/6/ar133515786363171.gif" height="217" alt="Merrie Monarch Hilo Hawaii" width="400"></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>People are especially intrigued with the male (kane) dancers, hula dancing to Hawaiian chants or Kahiko. The male dancers are large muscular men, of varying ages. The male hula dancers are nimble, dancing in unison on the balls of their feet or on tips of their toes. They sway their hips and rotate their backs, sometimes to the ground and up with ease, a fete that takes many years to accomplish.</span></p> <p></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>This hula group is called Ka Leo O Laka I Ka Hikina O Ka La. The hula teacher is Kaleo Trinidad. This hula troupe is from Honolulu Hawaii. They are dancing “Kakuhihewa”. Listen to the power of the dancers voices during their chanting, they are just as powerful with their hula movements. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>I hope you enjoy the chant and the art of male hula competition that was held on April 13, 2012 at the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo Hawaii.
