When selecting the plants for the front of my Sun City Grand home in Surprise AZ, my landscaper discouraged me in planting a Sago Palm saying that it struggles in the intense summer heat. At the time, a 5 gallon Sago Palm sold for about $70 at nearby nurseries.
After I was in my home for a few months, I found a small Sago Palm in the closeout section of Albertson's Supermarket in Surprise for around $5. Of all places to find selling a tiny Sago Palm, a large chain supermarket. My husband planted the little palm, adding it to the watering system. After four years, the palm has grown to about five feet high. It gets morning sun and afternoon shade, is thriving and appears to love where its planted.

What a fantastic photo, Leolinda! Those sagos can be a lot more hardy than "experts" let on...especially wiht regular water!

Very nice Leolinda - info on this lovely desert plant and your beloved Sun City AZ. All Good!!
Did you know Jeff Dowler will be in town this weekend? If not call me for details. One meetup tomorrow night at 7 at Wild Horse Pass, another Sunday am same place I believe. I plan to hopefully make it tomorrow night as we'll be in Prescott all weekend. Come join the fun!
Sharon, it's the water and the afternoon shade.
Anna, Jeff, here??? WOW! Wild Horse here I come! I'll call you tomorrow for the details.
I'm so jealous - I had 3 great ones and they all died. All were on drip. I followed fertilizing instructions - not to give much, but the just didn't like my yard.
Thanks for the photos.
Leolinda, that is a great looking plant! There are times that I wish that our climate would allow for plants like that!
Leolinda, Beautiful picture of your Sago Palm. You have a good eye for design.
Juli, the problem is that you don't have a purple thumb like me. :)
Tony and Darcy, you really wouldn't enjoy the 110+ degree summers just for a pretty plant.
Diane, that's too sweet. Thank you!
This really looks alive. Almost like fireworks.
Leolinda,
We have there here, and we are only a few degrees cooler than you. :)
Steve
That is "frame-worthy" - beautiful photo of a pretty spectacular plant!
Jane, yes it does.
Wow that plant really grew! I find "landscaped" communities always a little bit funny. I don't know who designs these things but when all the plants are small and dainty - it's great. But 12 full grown bushes in a small cul-de-sac front yard do not look "plamnned" Your story made me think of that. Loved the photo!
Leolinda,
Just popped over to say hi. I so enjoyed sitting next to you at Raincamp in Prescott, thought I'd visit your AR site, and the picture of the Sago palm really caught my eye. What a fantastic perspective shot on one of Arizona's most beautiful palms.
Hope all is well!
Jan
Cara, I never thought that the straggly potted plant would have grown so well, like a diamond in the rough.
Jan, good to meet you too. Yes, there are some beautiful palms in Arizona.
