Sun City West Arizona Golf Course Swans
There are 7 golf courses owned by the Sun City West homeowners association, 4 are championship courses & 3 are executive-length courses. Each of the seven golf courses have swans on their water holes. A few weeks ago I played golf at Trail Ridge Golf Course in Sun City West.

I met with a swan volunteer was was told that the swans are fed daily a mixture of a meal and wildlife pellets. There is one volunteer for each golf course with volunteers spending about an hour each day to feed the swans. Pebblebrook, Stardust, Grandview, Echo Mesa, Trail Ridge, Deer Valley and Desert Trails all have one volunteer.
Swans normally mate during the summer and can get aggressive during mating season. Swans are territorial during the summer and most golfers keep their distance. It's presently not mating season therefore the swans were mellow and calm the day that I played golf.
Whenever the swans need to be moved, or if they need to have their wings clipped, the volunteers are responsible for catching the swans. Evidently it's just a riot trying to get the swans out of the lake. The swan volunteer that I spoke with will be calling me the next time they need to move a swan. Sounds like a video is on the way.

Each swan has been named and sexed. I confirmed the names for all of the Trail Ridge swans. Swans die from either old age or they get attacked by coyotes. Most feeders feed the swans later in the day to keep the swans in the water at night and away from predators.
Swan food is provided by donations to the Sun City West recreation department and from the Sun City West homeowners association budget. A homeowners on lake 3 has donated enough funds to have an island constructed in the middle of the lake for the swans. Sun City West recreation centers will gladly accept donations made payable to the Sun City West Recreation Centers Environmental Services & Wildlife Division.

Great pics! My question though...Are those golf courses getting used enough? I was amazed at the big golf course boom 10 years ago and it appears we've gone long past the saturation point. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Kent, Excellent question. Sun City West has a program called Controlled Neighborhood Play(CNP). This program allows retirees from other Arizona West Valley retirment communities to play golf at reasonable rates. As such, the golf courses are well-utilized and kept in pristine condition.
