Respect After Death

Respect After Death

Respecting Life After DeathI am with family in Hawaii celebrating the life of my uncle who past away a few days ago. My mother had two brothers, my uncle Fernando was MIA in the Korean Conflict. Her other brother, my uncle Alex was a popular musician in the Big Island of Hawaii.

This morning my cousin Charlotte prepared his flowers. Aroma of the huge floral sprays and arrangements circulated the workroom in her garage. As I watched cousin Charlotte said, "these flowers are not for the dead, they are for the living". Respect After Death It's a way to show respect to the family for the loss of a loved one. As we respect life, respect death.

Respect for the family after death, do it frequently.

Respecting Life After Death

My uncle Alex was graced with a beautiful voice, one who serenaded thousands of people in Hawaii with his Puerto Rican music. He will be missed but will not be forgotten.

Wordless Wednesday ~ Reminiscing of Hawaii

Reminiscing of Hawaii

Reminiscing of Hawaii

Whenever I feel homesick for the Big Island, I pull out some of my favorite pictures.  This is Kalaniapia Waterfall on the Big Island of Hawaii north of Hilo. The cascading water is melodic at anytime of day or night. People frequently swim in the bottom of the falls. I may be away from Hilo, but Hilo is always in my heart.

Hilo Farmers Markets Flowers, Fruits and Vegetables

I was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii  and approximately 41,000 people presently call Hilo their home.  It rains almost every day in Hilo making the land and soil fertile, just stick it in the ground and it grows.  Fruits, tropical flowers and vegetables are seen almost everywhere you turn.  Each weekend farmers markets spring up with vendors selling their home grown products.

I was recently in Hilo and spent some time with family and of course, shopping.  My favorite Farmers Market in Hilo is the  Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers  market on Kinoole Street.  Directions

Here people purchase flowers to adorn their homes, give as gifts or  place on their loved ones graves.  I purchased a couple dozen anthuriums to place on my parents grave sites and take to several family members that I was visiting.

My most favorite flower is the obake anthurium.  Anthuriums are actually green but hybridization has produced color varieties of many forms and shapes. Obake in Japanese means ghost.

The vendors at the farmers market also sell Ti leaf plants, Cymbidium Orchids, Dendrobium Orchids, Proteas, Roses and Birds of Paradise.

Guavas, mangos and avacados are plentiful.

 Huge tomatoes

Lychees are just getting into season.

Organically grown papayas

Big Island chips, candy and popcorn

Next time you are in Hawaii, be sure to visit Hilo and check out any one of the many farmers markets.  Islanders will welcome you with genuine Hilo hospitality.  From this Hilo wahine transplanted in Arizona, ALOHA!

Sun City Grand ~ I live here, I work here, I know this community!
