Wordless Wednesday ~ SURPRISE Another Type of Starburst

Sun City Grand Surprise AZ

When selecting the plants for the front of my Sun City Grand home in Surprise AZ, my landscaper discouraged me in planting a Sago Palm saying that it struggles in the intense summer heat.  At the time, a 5 gallon Sago Palm sold for about $70 at nearby nurseries. 

After I was in my home for a few months, I found a small Sago Palm in the closeout section of Albertson's Supermarket in Surprise for around $5.  Of all places to find selling a tiny Sago Palm, a large chain supermarket.  My husband planted the little palm, adding it to the watering system.  After four years, the palm has grown to about five feet high.  It gets morning sun and afternoon shade, is thriving and appears to love where its planted.

Las Vegas Nevada Phoenix Arizona Route 93 Bridge

It's been over five years and soon to be completed is the Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.  The $160 million dollar bridge that raises over 900 feet above the Colorado River is scheduled for completion in 2011. 

Every time I drive to Las Vegas, I am in total awe with this majestic bridge and its uniqueness.  The drive from Sun City Grand to Las Vegas is approximately 4 1/2 hours.  Once the bridge opens, the drivetime from Surprise Arizona should be reduced to 3 1/5 hours.

If you've ever driven from Arizona to Nevada, you will agree that the present route (Route 93) is winding, has time consuming turns, switch backs, lots of pedestrian traffic and frequent stopping.  It is frustrating since takes an hour to drive through the Hoover dam barring a traffic accident.

The bridge will bypass Route 93 and provide a direct route between Arizona and Nevada.  This predicated the name change from the Hoover Dam bypass to the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.  Mike O'Callagham was a former governor of Nevada.  Pat Tillman, an Arizona son, was an American Football League player from Arizona who joined the US Army and was killed in Afghanistan.

 

The bridge road is supported on the two gigantic concrete arches that protrude out from the rock.  Each arch has over 50 sections, each each section is 24 feet long.  The arches on the completed structure will be more that 1,000 feet across. 

Can you image yourself driving on the bridge looking down?  I can't wait to experience what it will feel like.   The new bridge will be definitely make traveling to and from Arizona and Nevada faster and quite interesting especially around the Hoover Dam.

Surprise Arizona Sun City Grand Oktoberfest Celebration

Sun City Grand residents, family, guests and the City of Surprise celebrated Oktoberfest in a "Grand" style yesterday!  Each year residents celebrate the end of the hot summer while welcoming back the winter visitors.  The weather was perfect, and the event was highly successful!

Sun City Grand Dancers performed with various dancing with residents participating in line dancing, West Coast Swing, Square Dancing, Arizona Two-Step and Waltzes.

Artisans sold their works.  The show favorites appeared to be woodworking and jewelry.

Each club had a booth, displaying their club information and selling their club projects.  Even the Grand Democrats and the Grand Republicans had booths.  The four golf courses had drawings and there were merchandise discounts for visiting the respective booths. 

 

Food booths were strategically located.  Baked goods were sold in the Palm Center.  Everything looked delicious!

   

I would safely guess at least 5,000 people were at the event. 

I arrived late and missed the Zumba demonstration. Zumba is the most popular fitness aerobics dance craze in Sun City Grand. This YouTube Video portays the fun and excitement that Zumba dancers and onlookers experience.

If you missed Oktoberfest this year, mark it on your calendar for next.  It's truly a "Grand" time!

Speechless Sunday ~ Going Up or Coming Down

Sunrise or Sunset? 

Sun City Grand real estate

I can't remember taking this picture in the morning or evening. Whatever time of day, I was impressed with the sunrise or sunset. It was in Sun City Grand in Surprise Arizona. I guess my readers will have to decide when it was taken.  Whatever time of day, it was a Grand day in Sun City Grand!
