If you a lover of orchids as I am, Akatsuka Orchid Gardens on the Big Island of Hawaii is a must see stop. Located on the slopes of the Kilauea Volcano at 2,600 feet elevation, the gardens provide an ideal condition for growing orchids. Some of the orchids found at Akatsuka Orchid Gardens are extremely rare and one of a kind.
Akatsuka Orchid Gardens produces over 2500 different varieties of orchids, one of Hawaii's largest collections of orchids. Visitors can purchase orchid plants and cut flowers. Akatsuka takes care of shipping, handling and agricultural approvals. Arizona requires a special spray to eliminate spider mites from entering the state.
I have been accumulating separate species of orchids over the past few years. My collection is rather small in comparison to the orchids at Akatsuka. During this trip, I purchased an Oncidium orchid named Sharry Baby. It is popular but difficult to cultivate in Arizona. It's unique flower produces a chocolate smell, a beautiful fragrance in any room. Its flowers are soft and delicate with firm petals. The smell is just like chocolate, very addictive.
I have many reasons to return home to Arizona from my wonderful visit to the Big Island. Besides seeing my children, clients and pets, I can hardly wait in anticipation in receiving my newest Sharry Baby Chocolate Oncidium orchid from Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. Keep reading my blog to see the first blooms of my orchid.
