A popular sightseeing venture on the Island of Hawaii is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. My husband and I are vacationing at my ancestral home in Hilo Hawaii. A few days ago I took my husband to tour the national park and see Kilauea, the active Hawaiian volcano located about 30 minutes from Hilo.
Within the larger Kilauea summit caldera lies Halemaumau crater. Halemaumau is a circular crater that when last measured, was approximately 2,500 ft by 3,000 ft. In March 2008, scientists reported volcanic activity at Halemaumau. Since then, there is a distinct sulfur dioxide plume that can be seen from almost any lookout throughout the park. The best vantage point in observing Halemaumau is from the Thomas Jaggar observatory.
After spending the day at the Volcano National Park, we stopped for dinner at the Volcano Lodge. As soon as it was dark, we returned to the Jaggar Observatory. There was about a hundred people already there with many more that soon followed. It is extremely difficult to obtain a good night photograph. The wind was pushing the plume towards the observatory. Observers had their faces covered to assist them when breathing the sulfur dioxide.
