Sun is on the Horizon after Arizona Winter Storms
Arizona's extreme winter weather is reaping havoc throughout the state. It was a wild night of rain last night, the worst seen in almost 20 years. Yesterday alone the cities of Surprise had 3.4 inches of rain and Sun City West had 3.7 inches.
Arizona streets (Maricopa County) cannot accommodate heavy rainfall as what we had yesterday. Consequently many underpasses were closed yesterday. The hard clay becomes soggy, swamp-like in areas. I've had two home inspections in the past 48 hours, both of which had the same problem occurring with the air conditioners. The air conditioner sits on a platform normally located on the side of the home. The rainfall has resulted in a shift of the platforms due to the soft soil. The unleveled air conditioner causes the freon to become imbalanced which can eventually result in compressor failure.
Some people are getting cited with Arizona's Stupid Motorist Law. The law prohibits motorists from crossing a marked warning areas. There are some roads that are prone to flash floods when it rains. Motorists think that water on the road is shallow. They drive around barricades to get across the street, only to get stuck in the dangerous swiftly moving water that is now a raging river.
Arizona animals are not accustomed to stormy weather, they know sun but not rain. The rain storm scares dogs. Since many gates were blown open or fences blown down, the scared pet escapes. If captured, they are taken to a shelter. According to a local news station, about 10% of the animals are claimed within the first 72 hours. Unclaimed pets are kept for a period of time, thereafter the animals are either adopted or euthanized.
My motor-home is parked in Morman Lake, which is located miles from Flagstaff. Flagstaff had between 52 and 80 inches of snow yesterday. I can only imagine the snow on my motor-home when I see it in the spring.
I met a client for lunch in Sun City Grand at Dillons today and it was jammed packed with residents and visitors. Most were wearing their warm clothing, but smiling. I'm sure they were happy to see that the rain stopped. While showing property in Sun City West this afternoon, I saw people cleaning their yards, sweeping off the driveways and outside talking with neighbors, probably checking up on each other.
As a result of the national news, I've received several telephone calls from relatives in Hawaii checking up on my family and me. We'll have intermittent rain next week. Excellent for my orchids. My dogs are inside snug in their beds. Life is good, Arizona is a nice place to live and a beautiful place to visit.
