Blue Ridge Reservoir on the Mogollon Rim 365 Days in Arizona
Phelps Dodge Copper Products escavated and developed Blue Ridge Reservoir to provide the copper mining operations with water, specifically for the copper mine in Morenci Arizona. Blue Ridge is my most favorite Arizona getaway. As a former Phelps Dodge employee, I can attest that the company took pride in its Arizona treasure.
Blue Ridge Reservoir is located on the Mogollon Rim near the Blue Ridge ranger's station in the Coconino National Forest . The trip takes about two hours from Sun City Grand and Sun City West. My husband and I normally travel north on 1-17, east on the Camp Verde exit and north on Highway 260 (General Crooks Trail). This popular Arizona destination is easily accessible from Scottsdale as well. Just proceed north on the Beeline highway, past Payson, through Pine and Strawberry.
Once on the Blue Ridge campground road, it takes about 4 1/2 miles on gravel road to reach the reservoir. I have no problem with the road even in my Mercedes, just travel within the speed limit.
The road is unmistakably labeled and easy to travel. Sometimes people get discouraged and turn back not recognizing that they are just a short distance from the end.
Blue Ridge Reservoir is majestic and picturesque.
Each side of the canyon is enveloped with tall Ponderosa Pine Trees.
The water is still and placid and ice cold, an ideal hot Phoenix summer getaway.
Stocked with trout, this quiet natural preserve is a fishing delight.
Blue Ridge is very quiet affording you solace, enjoying the wilderness affording time to think and experience wildlife.
The beauty that surrounds the canyon is outrageously incredible.
Only 10 hp boats are allowed on Blue Ridge. The boat ramp is long, easy to load and unload.
The calm water makes Blue Ridge a popular kayaking location.
Each turn, every switchback has a different and more spectacular view.
