It's customary (and good manners) in Hawaii to remove your footwear at the front door. I've continued the custom even though I've moved from the Big Island of Hawaii. I normally remove my shoes at the front door when showing property, especially on occupied homes. I tend to leave my footwear on whenever I'm in vacant or unoccupied properties, especially short sale or foreclosures.
Not long ago I was showing clients property in Maricopa County. One specific home was vacant and showed rather well and it was very clean. I was in the kitchen with one buyer while the second buyer was perusing through the master bedroom. The second buyer came running to the kitchen saying that something was moving in the master bedroom closet.
Hidden like a ghost in the night in the track of the master closet door was a scorpion. True to most scorpions, it was playing dead. Most people would have just thought it was dirt or a leaf, reaching down to clean the track then getting stung. A hanger was used to remove it from the track and again it played dead, this time in a corner. Not for long. After a fast sturdy shoe it hobbled around with its tail in the air ready to sting whatever in its path, until big foot shoe came on the scene again.
We live in the desert. Yes, there are scorpions and snakes in Arizona. If the property is not fumigated regularly, scorpions sometimes get inside. The sting from these unwelcomed guests may result in an emergency room visit.
Purchasing an occupied or vacant property? I suggest you have it sprayed for insects prior to your move-in date.
