16th Annual Arizona Aloha Festival will be held at the Tempe Town Lake Beach Park
March 13th through the 14th, 2010
Each year Arizona celebrates the Aloha Festival during the second weekend in March. Hula, Tahitian, Maori dancers and Fireball perfomers will be on four stages from 10am to 5pm each day. Groups from Arizona, California, Nevada, Hawaii, New Zealand and the Cook Islands will dance ancient (kahiko) and modern (auana) hula as well as steel guitars and tropical rhythms.
Over 150,000 people attended last year's event with more expected this year. Proceeds of the yearly teeshirt sale will go to the Samoa Tsunami Relief. Anuhea, a popular recording artist from Hawaii will be performing at this year's festival. 80,000 Hawaiian Air Miles will be raffled off, that's enough miles for two round trip tickets and 5 nights at the Aston Paki Maui.
There's lots to see and do. Various clubs including the five outrigger canoe clubs from Arizona will be paddling. Lau Kanaka No Hawaii, a Hawaiian Club in Arizona since 1972 and student clubs from ASU, UofA, NAU and will be enrolling for their activities and playing rugby and volleyball.
Children (Keikis) can learn to make a lei using colorful paper flowers or make mini poi balls. Storytellers will tell stories of how ancient Hawaiians voyaged across the pacific to and from Hawaii, New Zealand and other South Pacific islands. Ukulele artists will teach basic ukulele playing.
Vendors will sell flower leis, lauhala hats, carved bone necklaces, Hawaiian apparel, colorful Hawaiian fabrics, surfer shorts, Kona coffees and Hawaiian music. Best of all, food reminiscent of the islands will be available: kulolo, haupia, poi, lau lau, lomilomi salmon, 
Portuguese malasadas, pork adobo and traditional plate lunches. Food will be plentiful!
Just bring your lauhala mat or chair and enjoy the music and festivities.
Oh yes, my hula dance troupe, Hanau O' Hawaii, will be performing on the Mountain Stage at 10:30am on Saturday.
